You could be eligible if you are currently an Associate member who successfully completed the CIPD Advanced Diploma or its past equivalent. You also need to be able to demonstrate that you have a minimum of one year's experience working at Chartered Member level.

What we're looking for

Working at 'Chartered Membership level' means that you are thinking at a strategic level, but delivery is likely to be operational, working with a range of stakeholders. There will be complexity in the thinking and / or delivery of the work you do. You’ll need to have worked consistently at this level for at least one year within the last five years.

  • Using your expertise in people, work and change to drive people change that impacts organisations and / or the profession.
  • Leading the thinking in the areas of people practices you’re delivering, considering the wider impact on other people approaches and business practices.
  • Synthesising information from a range of sources, critically questioning and evaluating it to make evidence-based and ethical decisions.
  • Working with and influencing a range of people professionals and other stakeholders across your organisation.
  • Having both an operational and strategic impact that affects other people practices and business practices, and impacts a wide range of customers and colleagues.
  • Creating medium to long-term value for employees, the organisation or the profession (value which is sustained for more than a year).

All Chartered Members need to:

  • Have a good understanding of a wide range of people practices and how they impact both each other and business practices.
  • Have a very good understanding of your organisation, its strategy and external trends in your sector.
  • Be committed to your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by reflecting on your work, connecting with peers across the profession, and enabling the development of others.
  • Comply with our Code of Professional Conduct.

What's involved

Your steps to upgrading to Chartered Member:

Step 1

If you feel you meet the requirements to become a Chartered Member, the first step is to send us an up-to-date CV. We'll then let you know within 10 working days whether Chartered Membership is the right grade for you, based on your experience.

To have the best chance to be successful with upgrading membership and to enable us to give you advice on your eligibility please ensure that your CV includes:

  • Employment dates and timeframes.

  • Your current role including key accountabilities, responsibilities and achievements which demonstrate the scope and scale of the projects you have worked on. If you are a consultant please include information about the roles undertaken/projects covered with the clients/organisations you work with.

  • Previous roles and organisations you have been employed by, or organisations you work with as a consultant, particularly focusing on the last five years.

Step 2

If following your CV review it's felt that it may be a good time for you to upgrade to Chartered Member, the next step is to prepare for your assessment. This will be your opportunity to showcase your current people experience with one of our experienced CIPD assessors. You can choose to complete either a telephone or form-based assessment.

How to apply

  1. Read the candidate guide for telephone assessment.

  2. Book your assessment and pay: If you’ve had your CV reviewed and you believe that you have the experience to upgrade, please call our Customer Services team on +44 (0)208 612 6208 to book a date and time convenient for you. There’s a non-refundable assessment fee which must be paid by credit or debit card when you book. 

  3. Read the terms and conditions of the upgrading telephone assessment. You will need to agree to these before your assessment.

  4. Request feedback: In advance of the assessment, you’ll be required to provide feedback from your line manager or client along with a copy of your current CV to the CIPD.

  5. Sit the assessment: During your assessment you will be asked to talk about your experience with one of our experienced assessors.

  6. Receive the outcome: Afterwards you'll receive notification of the outcome within 10 working days. If successful, you'll be able to access your digital membership card on the CIPD Community App. Prefer to get a physical card and certificate? Contact us on +44 (0)20 8612 6242.

Recently completed an Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management or Development? Your first upgrade using form-based assessment to Chartered Member is FREE, if submitted within a year of becoming an Associate member. 

How to apply

  1. Read the candidate guide for form-based assessment.

  2. Read and agree to the terms and conditions of the upgrading form-based assessment.

  3. Request feedback: Ask one colleague (e.g. line manager, senior customer or client) to support your application.

  4. Email the application and colleague feedback forms with a copy of your current CV to Please note that we don't accept postal applications or handwritten applications.

  5. Pay: Our Customer Services team will contact you for payment.

How much does it cost

The assessment fee to upgrade depends on the method you have selected:

  • Telephone assessment: £120
  • Form-based assessment: £60

The assessment fee is non-refundable.

Once you've upgraded successfully, you'll start paying the Chartered Member fee the next time you renew your membership.

Associate members, who've completed their CIPD Advanced Diploma within the last year, are eligible for one free upgrade through form-based assessment only.
